Meet Tribe Video Messaging App Brings Subtitles and Link Suggestions

Video messaging applications have gone pretty stale in the recent months. Users either type or just call their friends or family. However, Tribe, a rather new company that recently attracted a $3 million seeding wants to change that with its updated video application.

Tribe is, to begin with, a one-touch video walkie-talkie (not calling) app available for iOS and Android users. The application’s major spotlight lies in its real-time voice recognition algorithm that can extract text from the messages you’ve sent. Through that, Tribe can analyze and present the recipient with subtitles or if you’ve mentioned about something particular (Tribe calls it a “Magic Word”) such as the elections or the new Google Pixel.

Tribe is the video messaging/social media app from France, from CEO Cyril Paglino. Tribe looks something like a mashup between Snapchat and a Windows phone. The home screen is comprised of brightly colored panels which are your contacts, “tribes,” help, and menu tiles.

The main draw is that Tribe is super easy to use, and as they put it, “do everything with one thumb.” Users can scroll through their contacts with a thumb swipe, and sending a video message is as simple as holding down the record button. The app also displays weather and location coordinates for the video sent, as well as when the video was sent. Afterwards, users can choose to “save” or “reply” before the video disappears for good.

This week the company released an update bringing the chat experience to another level. By introducing something they call Augmented Messaging, the app is now able to listen to the words you’re saying in your video messages, and deliver relevant information about them.

Tribe will come up with a bunch of relevant links and information for follow-up. Furthermore, if you reply with, for instance, “let’s meet for coffee at 5pm”, Tribe can pop up a window for setting a reminder too.

For example: If you’re mentioning someone famous like Tim Cook, it automatically displays a link to more information like their Twitter account and official website. The voice recognition also picks up on a lot of other categories like movies, brands, consumer goods and music — all linking to relevant information. And if you’re talking about how you should have coffee to catch up, it can automatically create a calendar invite for both of you.

This app has a mirror to show how you look all the time. This will help you to check yourself before starting recording a message.

Tribe messaging app comes pretty handy when you want to directly communicate with your family, friends and colleagues. The best thing is that this app eliminates prior scheduling headache and you can send videos without worrying about their current availability.

Tribe currently has over 500,000 downloads, after more than a year after its original launch back in August 2015. However, only 40,000 use it daily making the app quite lonely as of now. The concept although, is splendid and even if it doesn’t take off individually, I can imagine someone like Facebook or Snapchat acquiring Tribe. It’s definitely worth giving a try, so head over to the Android Play store and iOS app store for downloading. To know more, you can also take a look at the demo video attached below.
