Google’s Pixel phones stole the show during its recent event but one could simply not ignore the impending Daydream View VR headset which is expected to work in tandem with the Daydream-ready smartphones. Priced at $79 the View VR is expected to be laced with loads of content.
Google has taken the VR push to the next level by introducing a new Daydream Keyboard app for VR Typing. It is this app that will let you use the VR keyboard in an open space using controllers. It isn’t actually the first time we have been treated to such an app as before a developer had created a similar app that simulated Windows environment in VR.
The caveat, however, is that the VR app will only work with Daydream ready phones and as of now it translates to Pixel and Pixel XL. The description in the app store says that “Daydream Keyboard is an on-screen virtual reality keyboard for text entry in Daydream applications,” they further warn that “If you uninstall Daydream Keyboard some Daydream apps will not work.”
The Daydream headset touts a fabric material that apparently makes it much lighter than its counterparts and it also comes bundled with an auto-alignment system for supporting phones. Needless to say, the Daydream controllers will come with movement and gesture sensors.
As we were talking earlier Google will be roping in content creators including Buzzfeed, CollegeHumor, Unbox Therapy and many others. Google Daydream VR will be up for sales in November and is also being offered free of cost for US Pixel phone buyers.
Virtual Reality has been spreading its tentacles and it is only a matter of time when the technology becomes mainstream, many phones including the Lenovo Vibe Note K5 offer a built-in VR feature and a VR headset as an optional accessory. Google has been one of the first companies to bolster the VR technology and it all started with the minimalistic Google Cardboard.
