Facebook Messenger Add New Feature scannable profile codes like Snapchat

Facebook is trying to make it easier to get in touch with people over Messenger, so it’s rolling out a number of new ways to start chatting. As with all Facebook accounts, all Messenger accounts will now have dedicated links that people can visit to start a chat — they’ll all be located at m.me/[username].

The format of the URL is m.me/[username]. So, for users that want to chat with a specific friend, they can follow the format and type in the username (which is the same as a person’s Facebook username) to open up a chat window on Messenger.com. Facebook notes that these unique usernames will be able to be set and edited, and the feature will roll out in the “coming weeks.”

Facebook has introduced scannable codes for helping users connect users with businesses. Called Messenger Codes, the feature allows you to scan the code, which is a circular pattern around the profile photo in Messenger settings. Each user has unique code for scanning and sharing.

The codes are made to be “beautifully designed,” the post explained, such that job seekers and businesses could include them on a business cards for easy network building.

The purpose of this feature is to help reduce the hassle of finding or asking someone his name’s correct spelling or remember the right number at a busy event. The feature is very similar to Snapchat’s snapcodes, which make it easier for adding new Snapchat friends.

In addition to announcing these new features, Facebook also announced a new milestone for Messenger: it now has 900 million monthly active users. That’s a big deal for Facebook, as it means it has yet another property nearing in on 1 billion monthly users. WhatsApp hit that mark in February. Facebook has been at that point for a while now, and in November it began averaging 1 billion active users each day.
