How to Disable Ads in Windows 10 File Explorer (2 Methods)

Microsoft has been infamous off late for logging a lot of user data and injecting ads into various parts of Windows 10. Well, that trend’s not dying anytime soon. With its latest move, Microsoft is promoting OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage solution, right in the Windows 10 File Explorer. The ad prompt reminds you that for about $6.99 a month, you can get Microsoft Office 365’s monthly subscription and 1 TB of cloud storage.

Ads are already available for the Windows Insiders. In case if you think that these ads are annoying then don’t worry we got a tweak for you which allows you to disable the File Explorer ads in Windows 10.

In case if you are not familiar with the ads then let me clear thing up. I am talking about those OneDrive and Office 365 notification which often appears when you launch the File Explorer. The reason why I am using advertise word is that Microsoft is promoting the service. And it seems fair since they are displaying the ads about their services on their products.

#1 Method: Disable notifications/ads in File Explorer via Registry

1. First of all, open Registry Editor. Type Regedit in Start menu or taskbar search box and then press Enter key. If you see the UAC prompt, click Yes button to open Registry Editor.

2. In the Registry Editor window, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3. On the right-side, look for ShowSyncProviderNotifications DWORD, double-click on it and finally, change its value data to 0 (zero) to turn off notifications.

To show notifications again, change the value data to 1.

NOTE: If ShowSyncProviderNotifications DWORD doesn’t exist, right-click on an empty spot, click New, click DWORD (32-bit) and name it as ShowSyncProviderNotifications.

#2 Method: Turn off ads in Windows Explorer in Windows 10

1. Open File Explorer on your Windows 10 PC and navigate to “View” > “Options”.

2. In the “Folder Options” window that opens up, switch to the “View” tab, uncheck the box where it says “Show sync provider notifications” and click “OK”.

That’s it. Easy, wasn’t it? You will be no longer be bothered by those OneDrive advertisements.

However, if you use OneDrive on your Windows 10 PC, you will not receive any sync notifications after you have disabled the aforementioned option. Other than that, this should make sure that there are no OneDrive ads in your PC’s Windows 10 File Explorer. While this is an extremely simple fix, I believe that Microsoft should have disabled the option by default or at least prompted a dialogue box asking whether a user wants to turn it on.

Meanwhile, you easily disable the ads in the File explorer using the aforementioned method. Hopefully, Microsoft ceases to use such techniques in the future and prevent themselves from getting backlashed by the community. Do you think that Microsoft is right in promoting its products and services inside Windows?
