Google Officially Releases Android O Developer Preview Images

Well, 2 days ago Google rolled out the second beta version of Android 7.1.2 Nougat for Pixel and Nexus devices. However, Google seems to have another surprise for us. Previously we have seen some rumors and lots of teasing regarding Android “O”

Android O Might not be the official name for the next version of Android, but for now, it’s just Android O. Google had launched the first developer preview of the upcoming version of its mobile operating system which is right now code-named Android O.

The Android O Developer Preview, which is 'strictly' not intended for daily or consumer use, is available for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel, Pixel XL and Pixel C devices.

As this is a developer preview, Google might add new features or remove some of the ones mentioned below entirely before the actual consumer preview is released in May.

Notifications channels: Notifications have always been one of the perennial strong features of Android. In O, you can group your notifications into channels or as Google describes it: "app-defined categories for notification content". So if you had a channel of apps that are all "news" related, you could interact and control notification settings for all the apps in the news channel at once.

Multi-Display: Well, if any activity supports multi-window mode and is running on a device with multiple displays then users can move the activity from one display to another.

Picture in picture: Google is also introducing picture-in-picture support (PIP) with Android O. With PIP, users will be able to minimise whatever video they are watching and watch it whilst using another application.

Developers can specify which aspect ratio they want for their application and can even set custom interactions on the PIP window. This feature is already available on devices running Android TV.

Battery life: Improving the battery life is one of the biggest and most welcomed features of Android O. Similar to iOS, Android O will limit and manage what apps do in the background while multiple apps are open.

This is one of those "behind the curtain" features that you'll appreciate even if you can't see exactly how it works. For example, if you are using Instagram but have Google Maps open in the background, location services will update the location less frequently for Maps to keep it from draining your battery as fast.

Snoozing: This is the new feature that can snooze notification to reappear again at later time. Well, guess what? With the help of this feature users can see important notifications at the same level of importance, they first appeared with.

Lock screen shortcuts: On the lock screen in Android Nougat there is a microphone icon for quick access to Google Assistant and a camera icon for quick access to take a picture. Android O will allow you to customize your lock screen with even more shortcuts.

Improved keyboard control: Android O won't be restricted to phones, so there will be improved arrow and tab key navigation for when used with a physical keyboard.

Background limits: In Android Nougat Google introduced the ability to restrict certain app activities in the background, and in Android O it improves on this by placing the priority on extending battery life without user-input.

Support for third-party calling apps: Android O supports third-party calling apps natively. Google has introduced a new feature called 'Telecom framework', which allows for third-party calling applications to work with each other and with carriers.
