Now Bluetooth 5 Is Available To Device Manufacturers

One of the most important advances we left the end of the last century is undoubtedly the wireless communication. Just look back and see how it has changed the way we relate. Thus, we should thank to the technologies such as Bluetooth, mobile networks, infrared, or Wi-Fi.

These technologies have evolved a lot in a few years, making mobile devices are able to provide the services that we currently enjoy. Now, almost two decades after the first protocol, comes the latest version of Bluetooth, a technology that has been very helpful when the Wi-Fi did not work for some tasks.

Compared to the Bluetooth 4.2 protocol, Bluetooth 5 offers a range that’s four times longer, meaning that you don’t have to worry as much about moving too far away from a device to which you’re wirelessly connected. Furthermore, Bluetooth 5 offers two times the speed of Bluetooth 4.2, making it faster to transmit data via the technology.

“Bluetooth is revolutionising how people experience the IoT. Bluetooth 5 continues to drive this revolution by delivering reliable IoT connections and mobilising the adoption of beacons, which in turn will decrease connection barriers and enable a seamless IoT experience,” said Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “This means whole-home and building coverage, as well as new use cases for outdoor, industrial, and commercial applications will be a reality. With the launch of Bluetooth 5, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of IoT developers and consumers while staying true to what Bluetooth is at its core: the global wireless standard for simple, secure, connectivity.”

Bluetooth SIG said products with Bluetooth 5 support could debut within two to six months. The group said it expects 13.9 billion wireless products to ship by 2020, and its goal is to make sure as many of those devices as possible support Bluetooth. Given how popular the standard is today, the fact that one of the world's largest tech companies seems to have a vendetta against physical connections, and Bluetooth 5's improvements, that shouldn't be too hard.

It is hoped that we can begin to see the Bluetooth 5 in action in the upcoming devices during the first half of 2017. In any case, it is an improvement that makes little sense in this era of Internet of Things.
