Facebook Messenger Allows Group Video Calling to Apps and Web

With 2016 coming to an end, Facebook has announced yet another new feature for its Messenger app. Facebook Messenger will now allow group video calls with up to 50 participants at one time. Group Video Chat has already started rolling out to iOS and Android devices, and desktop versions of Facebook Messenger  – worldwide.

The feature could make a Messenger a place to “livechill” with friends rather than just a way to send texts to exchange more utilitarian information or plan logistics. Instead of just popping in to fire off messages, you could hang out for extended periods on the app. Facebook frames it as “perfect for those spontaneous moments where text just isn’t enough”.

To make a group video call, all you need to do is download the latest version of the Messenger and then go to any group conversation inside the app. Tap on the video icon on the upper right side of the screen, and it will start the video chat with everyone in the group being asked to join in on the call. It is also possible to ring just a few people in the group, or the entire group at the same time.

Facebook has limited the calls to groups of six, though up to 50 other participants to join in without video once the limit is reached. (If you want to have a wider group where everyone has video, you'll need to use another app like Skype.)

You can start a group video call in a pre-existing group text chat, using a camera icon in the upper right corner. If you want to start a new group call, just tap the “Calls” button on the bottom of the app, then select “Start group call.” You will have the option to start the call in either video or voice. People you call will receive a notification and be able to join in on the video chat whenever they are ready.

The Messenger team recently released an update that improved the camera in the app and introduced 3D effects, stickers, and masks that can be added to photos and videos — similar to Snapchat. These 3D effects can be used in real time during video calls as well — it’s available for iOS at launch, and it’s coming soon to Android.

The feature doesn’t have anything to do with Facebook Live streaming, which lets users broadcast live video to their Facebook friends and followers, introduced earlier this year. That will remain limited to one live video feed.
