Google Announced Five New Products And Services In India

Google announced five new products that are adapted for and aimed at expanding access to the Internet for users in India. This includes new products built for specifically for India — YouTube Go, the Google Assistant in Hindi inside messaging app Allo, faster browsing for Google Play on 2G connections — as well as new, global platforms inspired by the needs of Indian users — the Google Station Wi-Fi platform and new data-saving features in Google Chrome for mobile.

Anandan noted, “Our vision is to make India a global hub of innovation and produce high quality mobile developers who will build not just for India but for the world.”

YouTube Go

The app is basically designed for offline viewing and sharing. The app will be first released in India for testing and gradually it will be rolled out in other countries as well. To be more precise, YouTube Go will allow users to save videos offline in different quality formats sharing exact data to be used. The app is essentially built on the YouTube offline feature which was released in India last year.

Google Play on 2G

Google also announced fast browsing in Google Play for 2G users and other low-bandwidth connections. Fast browsing uses preloading on Wi-Fi to load the most popular parts of Google Play quickly. And when a user on a low-bandwidth connection chooses to install an app, Google Play will offer a new “Wait for Wi-Fi” option where the app will only install when the phone next connects to Wi-Fi. Fast browsing has been launched as an experiment exclusively to Play users in India.

Google data Chrome

Chrome on Android will now also automatically optimize pages to their essentials when 2G-like networks are detected. These simplified pages load up to 2X faster, saving more than 90% of data usage. Chrome on Android’s new Download feature will now allow users to save web pages, videos, music, or pictures. Downloaded items can be easily accessed in Chrome’s new downloads tab, even when offline. And if users go offline before the download is complete, the process will automatically resume next time they’re connected.

Google Station

This new platform will work with partners to roll out Wi-Fi hotspots, offering carriers, system integrators (SIs), and venues an easy way to set up high-quality, user-friendly Wi-Fi. This will provide more people in India and around the world fast, reliable, and safe Wi-Fi in more of the places where they spend time, like malls, transit stations, and cafes.

Google Assistant

Google announced its AI-based Google Assistant at I/O 2016 earlier this year, and it has already made its way to Google’s messaging app, Allo. It’s the advanced version of Google Now that allows users to have a proper conversation, rather than asking pre-programmed questions. Users can also ask follow up questions and the assistant can pick up the conversation to return the right answer. However, Google Assistant support is only available for English language with support for Hinglish. Google understands the huge user base in India and it has announced Google Assistant will soon support Hindi language by the end of this year. Over the past year and a half, Google witnessed 10X growth in local language queries in India, with Hindi content consumption five times faster than English content. And it makes perfect sense for the company to bring Hindi Language support to its advanced AI-based assistant.

“Our goal has not just been to help more Indians get online — but also help Indians create the online experience they want — one that serves their needs and enables them to have an impact on the entire world,” said Caesar Sengupta, Vice-President, Next Billion Users, Google.
