Facebook Launches New Lifestage App with video profiles for Teens

A lot of Facebook apps come and go, with apps like Facebook Camera and Facebook Paper offering new ways to use Facebook but ultimately getting pulled. Now Facebook has another new app that it’s hoping will catch on.

In a constant attempt to gain a younger audience, Facebook has launched a new standalone iOS app called Lifestage, geared towards users 21 and younger. To create a bio, instead of text, video snippets of your likes, dislikes, best friend, dance moves and more are recorded and compiled into a profile for others to watch. While users 22 and over can technically still download and use Lifestage, they will only be able to see their own profiles as the app is designed for high schoolers to get to know their classmates better.

The app tasks you with taking short videos to create a profile. For example, it’ll ask to see your happy face, your best friend, the way you dance, and your likes. The app will show you bio questions that you can answer, and as you answer them, more will become unlocked.

Created by 19-year-old Facebook product manager Michael Sayman, he says that the inspiration of the app was to replicate Facebook back when users didn't run the risk of having their posts seen by their parents or other family members, while also making the app more relevant to the times by making it focused on video.

Fortunately, as the app is targeted exclusively toward teens, there are plenty of blocking and reporting features available, though it remains to be seen whether these will be responsible and if the team in charge will be able to respond to them appropriately.

Lifestage is now available for download, but it’s currently only available to iPhone users.

The app allows uses to discover video profiles created by others in their school and learn more about their colleagues, their shared interests and passions. Every time someone updates their page, it will show up in a feed prompting others to check it out.

Users are required to select their school name after signing up. The app will show other people’s profile to them only when at least 20 other students from the same school register on it.
