Google Rolling Out Material Design looks on Chrome OS

Chrome 50 is starting to roll out to all of Chrome's platforms, but it's Chrome OS that will see the biggest change. With version 50, Chrome OS gets a Material Design makeover. Sebastien Gabriel, a senior designer at Google, detailed the changes on his webpage.

The update involves the usual Material Design features such as a ‘flatter, sharper and lighter design’, but also contains a complete revamp of how Google implements the Core UI.

It revamped the Chrome with a dark coloured theme for Incognito mode, changes in tab shapes, new colour scheme, buttons and info bars and more.

– New default theme.
– Complete overhaul of the Incognito theme with a new dark color.
– Complete revamp of tab shapes, icons, and omnibox to match mobile.
– Introducing Material Design ripples and morphing buttons states.
– New color, more accessible color scheme.
– New info bars and buttons.

Google has also announced a reward of more than $2,500,000 for hackers to find bugs in Chrome’s system, to help strenthen its security. Google Chrome already has over 1 billion active users worldwide. But it is the first time, it has crossed this mark on smartphones.

As well as Chrome OS and Chrome on the desktop, this update will also be heading to Chrome for Android on phones and tablets.

The new interface should kick in on Chrome OS automatically. Users on Windows and Mac can try the new interface by downloading Chrome Canary, typing "Chrome://flags" into the address bar, and turning on the "Material Design in the browser's top chrome" option. Gabriel warns that these designs are still a work in progress on Windows and Mac.
