WhatsApp is bringing back its old status update feature which is currently rolling out to beta testers of the app. Last month when the messaging platform launched a Snapchat ripoff on its app, the text status feature was suspended. Many users lashed back at WhatsApp’s decision to remove the text update feature and now it seems the company is bringing back the feature.
The new update which bumps the version up to 2.17.95 allows beta testers to put up a status text message, which is reflected on their profile page. And this status won't vanish unlike the photos, videos and gifs shared under the Status tab that disappear after 24 hours.
To view or set a status, user has to tap on three dots given at the top right corner of the WhatsApp interface and then go to Settings. Next tap on the display picture and go to 'About and phone number'. Set your status just like earlier and same options like Busy, Available and others to choose from.
The feature is available only for Androids beta testers and may soon be rolled out to others.
The revival of the text status doesn't mean that the new WhatsApp Status feature will disappear. It still very much exists in a separate tab where you can add photos and videos that disappear in 24 hours, just like Snapchat. The tab also lists all the new updates from your contacts in the same format as you see on Snapchat. Unfortunately, there's no way (yet) to disable this feature completely.
WhatsApp seems to be working aggressively on its interface to give better experience to its over 1 billion users across the globe. In an another beta update, the chat app has introduced separate buttons for voice and video calls. This makes it quick and easier to initiate calls through the app.
Also the company has relocated the attachment icon. Now user can find the attachment icon in the text box itself, next to the camera icon. Earlier user had to scroll to the top of the screen to find the attachment icon . The empty space left behind by the attachment is taken by the video call button.
