WhatsApp Add User Mentions Feature for Group Chats

Popular messaging service WhatsApp has finally enabled the mention feature on its Android as well as iPhone app. The mention feature works same as it does on Facebook and Twitter. Users will have to use "@" sign in a group chat and the app will automatically suggest names of the group members.

Now, WhatsApp is making sure that its users know exactly when it's time to redirect their attention to a particular group chat with its new mentions feature, This feature is now live in the latest WhatsApp beta v2.16.272.

When you're in a group chat, try typing the symbol @ and you'll get a list of all the participants in that chat. You can tap any of them or just type the first letters of anyone's name and it'll narrow down to them. Select them and the name will show up as hyperlinked (blue) in the text entry box. Once you send the text, the hyperlink will still be there in the sent message.

Developers are currently working on implementing the Two-Factor-Authentication in the app where you can ensure the safety of your WhatsApp using the added security layer. Even though it does not make much sense because WhatsApp already informs the user if a WhatsApp web session is active, alerting them of any intruders snooping on their account. Moreover, the Two-Factor-Authentication would not work if a hacker or user gets hands on their mobile device which is not secured using a pin or password on the lock screen.

If you are rooted android user, you can enable some hidden features of Whatsapp.  Check out how to enable Whatsapp hidden features for rooted Android Users.

Another thing to note, as pointed by WABetaInfo is that WhatsApp Privacy Policy has pointed out at the possibility of the arrival of bots to the popular multimedia messaging platform. The server-side update to enable the feature comes just days after it introduced Snapchat-like doodling options and selfie flash on the Beta version of its Android application. The instant messaging service is also working on developing a video calling feature and support for sharing GIF files roll out soon, similar to the rollout of mentions feature.

To get this option, you'll need to join the Play Store beta program.
