Google’s New Smartphones Name Pixel and Pixel XL Replace to ‘Nexus’

Just two days ago, a report suggested that Google would abandon the Nexus branding for its upcoming 2016 phones and go with something else, though no one was sure at the time what the new brand would be. That thought lined up with a report from back in June out of the Telegraph that claimed Google would release its own branded phone later in 2016 and was discussing the move with carriers. This evening, additional support has been stacked behind this idea, only now we may have names to replace Nexus.

According to Android Police, Google will indeed go with its own in-house brand for its upcoming phones, a brand you are actually familiar with already – Pixel. The two HTC-made Google phones will release as the Pixel and Pixel XL.

As you can probably guess, Pixel will be the smaller “sailfish” device with a 5-inch display, while the Pixel XL will be the “marlin” device with a larger 5.5-inch display. The sources also say that the new smartphones from Google are expected to be released on October 4th.

One of the sources claims that Google will be selling the Pixel and the Pixel XL as the first smartphones built by the company. However, Android Police remains absolutely certain that HTC is the one manufacturing the devices, and while the smartphones will not carry the HTC name and were designed solely by Google, leaving HTC out of the picture is probably not something that Google will do.

“And while Google may be solely responsible for their industrial design, to insinuate that HTC was nothing but a manufacturing partner would probably be fiction. I would not be surprised if that relationship blurs the ODM/OEM lines far more than Google may suggest in its future marketing. But we’ll have to wait and see.”

It addition to the Pixel and Pixel Xl, it is expected that Google will also unveil a new 4K Chromecast called Chromecast Ultra or Chromecast Plus, and a Daydream VR headset potentially called Daydream View. We should also get another look at the Google Home smart home speaker hub and its final launch details.

Google is expected to announce its latest flagship smartphones over the next few weeks. By then, we will be confirming all the official details of the upcoming devices.
