Google Testing 'Andromeda' Android-Chrome OS Hybrid

Google's October event has been the talk of the town for the past few months. However, the only thing people know about the said event is that it will hold the introduction of the 2016 Google phones. Now, it looks like fans can expect more than just a new flagship phone release. According to recent hints, an Android-Chrome OS merge is likely to happen, and it will be announced at the same event.

This operation, broader, the system is expected to arrive with the name Andromeda. Does, Google thinking about ending Android as we knew so far?

It is still not very concrete about what Google is preparing for its two operating systems. It is said that soon both Android and Chrome OS may disappear and in its place may appear Andromeda, a merger between its two operating systems.

Android boss Hiroshi Lockheimer tweeted something over the weekend that, when read into, seemed to fuel speculation that an Android/Chrome OS hybrid might also be announced at the event.
Google has already released a teaser last week confirming that the company is set to hold an event on the 4th of October. While the teaser did tease a smartphone announcement, Google should have more things up its sleeve. Aside from the new phones, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, some fans also expect new products like upgraded Chromecasts and new Google Wifi.

The source code also suggests that this isn’t a small code or feature insertion, but requires a complete rebuilding of the system image. This is hinted at by the fact that part of the ASOP page mentions a “Flushed Nexus 9 device using volantis and volantis-andromeda images”.

Google is testing Andromeda on a Nexus 9. The site found mentions of Andromeda in the Android 7.0 Nougat AOSP code, in a "SurfaceCompositionTest.java" file, which is a low-level test result to measure graphics performance. Andromeda is mentioned several times in the file; it also shows that the test device is a Nexus 9.

According to the tool, Andromeda requires a score of 8.0 to pass a device, with the Nexus 9 scoring 8.8. It also says that "We distinguish results for Andromeda and Android devices". The minimum accepted composition score for Android is 4.0.

Among the keys to this new software is the fact that Google could compete with focused productivity devices, such as the iPad Pro or tablets Surface Pro from Microsoft. Last year, Google tried with Pixel C relying on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and evidently not convinced its consumers because Android can not compete with computers, but Chrome OS does have that possibility and that is something special which would be offered in the so-called operating system Andromeda.
